Derek has spent over 22 years dimensioning hardwoods and building custom furniture. Beginning in a small timber frame shop in New England, he mastered classic mortise-and-tenon construction and traditional hand-tool joinery.

At M3Tools, Derek operates on the shop floor. He measures spindle deflection down to the ten-thousandths of an inch, logs heat curves on router bits, and tests cutters to their failure points to separate high-quality steel from cheap imports.

How We Rate Woodworking Tools

We believe that tool reviews should be objective, repeatable, and scientific. We reject marketing fluff. Here are the three pillars of our testing standards:

Runout & Deflection

We use dial test indicators to measure radial runout at the spindle and shank. A router bit with more than 0.001" of runout is flagged for poor cut quality.

Thermal Performance

We monitor cutting tool temperature profiles using infrared cameras to detect heat buildup that scorches wood and dulls edges.

Edge Wear Magnification

We evaluate cutting edge degradation under a 50x magnification loupe before and after routing hundreds of feet of abrasive materials.
